This course appears in the course catalog as 英語II (English II).

This course is required of all freshmen who selected English as their first foreign language. This course may not be exempted.

Prerequisite: none.

In this one-semester online course, students acquire skills to understand some common expressions used on college campuses; read some academic material; watch some journalistic video programs; and say some telephone phrases.

Much of the work for this course is done individually over the web in our CALL (computer-aided language learning) classrooms.

Student must

  • take TOEFL-ITP held on campus on 2011-06-16 Saturday (date may change to 2011-06-23)
  • take the final exam held between 2011-07-24 and 2011-07-30
  • complete specified online assignments

All-English training for giving a campus tour



This course appears in the course catalog as 英語演習初級ー5 (English Seminar, introductory level, class 5).

Class meets during wed1 in a non-CALL room to be determined. This course uses CALL, but does not meet in a CALL classroom. You will use CALL for self-study after class.

Registration is limited to 25 students. To register, you must enter and win the course registration lottery between 2012-09-27 and 2012-10-02. Lottery results were announced on 2012-10-04 at 08:30.

This course is offered to all freshmen who scored less than 420 in TOEFL-ITP.

Prerequisite: e2 (英語II, English II).

In this one-semester wholly-English course, students acquire skills to meet people, give walking directions on or near campus, and suggest and explain sightseeing spots.

If the course progresses rapidly, students will also become able to: explain how to order food, pay, eat, and bus dishes at the campus cafeteria; explain the names, ingredients, cooking methods, and eating techniques of common Japanese food and drink; and explain restaurant menus written in Japanese.

Much of the work for this course is done in class by practicing conversations.

Students shall prepare for class by studying words and phrases that will be used in conversations.

This course appears in the course catalog as 英語III中級ー6C (English 3, intermediate level, class 6C).

Class meets during wed2 in a non-CALL room to be determined. This course uses CALL, but does not meet in a CALL classroom. You will use CALL for self-study after class.

Registration is limited to 35 students. To register, you must enter and win the course registration lottery between 2012-07-24 and 27. Lottery results will be announced on 2012-09-19 at 08:30.

This course is offered to freshmen in "kiso 基礎" classes 6 through 15 who scored between 420 and 530 in TOEFL-ITP.

Prerequisite: e2 (英語II, English II).

In this one-semester wholly-English course, students acquire skills to (a) meet people, (b) understand short videos such as anime and documentaries, and (c) say, hear, read and write using phrases that commonly appear in casual conversations or documentary programs.

During class, you will prepare sentences that you will use in your conversations, and talk with your conversation partners .

After class, at home or in a CALL classroom, you will use the glexa online learning system to view videos, answer questions, study new phrases, and write or say sentences. You will memorize the new phrases and sentences so that you can use them in your next class.

You may study with friends during and after class.
